Miniature painting of a Maharaja – (4232)

Maharaja also spelled maharajah is a Sanskrit title for a great ruler’, ‘great king’ or ‘high king’. We don’t know which maharaja is depicted here but the pearls and semi-precious stones around his neck show that he is an important and wealthy ruler. He is wearing a kind of turban with a gilded band around it. This miniature was painted on an ivory slab in the first half of the 20th century. Height 16 cm. Width 8 cm.
